What you get

What a licence search shows

A driving licence is the card a regional transport office issues so a person can drive a stated class of vehicle.

Validity

See whether the licence record is still current and what status it carries.

Expiry date

The valid-to date shows when the licence needs renewal, with the days left.

Vehicle classes

Confirm which cars, bikes or heavy vehicles the licence covers.

Issuing office

The RTO code on the record shows which office issued the licence.

Number format

How a licence number is written

Example: GJ01 2019 0001234

Type the number without spaces or dashes. A short number cannot be matched, so include all the digits printed on the card.

A record may include the holder (name masked), the licence number, the classes the holder may drive, the issue and validity dates, and the RTO code.

You can also check a licence on the official Sarathi Parivahan portal.

Classes

Vehicle classes on a licence

A record names the classes the holder may drive. Offices sometimes print a shorter code.

MCWOG

Scooters and mopeds without a gear

MCWG

Motorcycles with a gear

LMV

Cars, jeeps and similar light vehicles

LMV-TR

Light goods or passenger vehicles used for hire

HMV

Trucks and buses

Transport

Vehicles used to carry goods or passengers for hire

Apply

How to apply for a driving licence

A permanent licence comes after a learner's licence and a driving test. This is the usual order at a regional transport office.

  1. 1

    Learner's licence

Fill the application at the office or on Sarathi. Take proof of identity, proof of address and photographs.

  2. 2

    Book the test

Book the learner's test. It covers road signs and traffic rules.

  3. 3

    Pass the test

A pass issues a learner's licence, valid for six months.

  4. 4

    Practise and book

After practice, book the driving test at the same office.

  5. 5

    Get the card

When the driving test is passed, the office issues the permanent licence.

After you have it

A digital copy and renewals

A digital copy

DigiLocker and the mParivahan app can store a digital driving licence issued to the holder. This site does not download or store that copy.

Renewing a licence

The valid-to date is printed on the card. Renew it before that date through Sarathi Parivahan. A transport licence is renewed on a shorter cycle than a private one. Take proof of age, proof of address and a recent photograph.

FAQ

Questions about licence search

Short answers about what this search shows, and what it does not.

01Do I need a date of birth to check a licence?

No. Date of birth is optional. Add it when the licence number alone does not return a record.

02Why is the holder name masked?

The name arrives masked from the source, and this site does not show a licence holder's full name.

03How is a driving licence number written?

A common number looks like GJ01 2019 0001234: the state code, the issuing office, the year of issue and a serial number.

04Where can I check the official record?

On the official Sarathi Parivahan portal. This site shows what a third-party source returns and is not a government portal.

05Can I download my licence here?

No. DigiLocker and the mParivahan app can store a digital driving licence issued to the holder. This site does not download or store that copy.

06How long is a learner's licence valid?

A learner's licence is valid for six months. A permanent licence follows after you pass the driving test.
