Why it matters

Why a vehicle's age matters

Age affects what a vehicle is worth, what you pay to insure it and which rules apply.

Resale value

Age is one of the biggest factors in what a used car or bike is worth.

Insurance

Insurers use the age of a vehicle to set the premium and the insured value.

Fitness and renewal

Older vehicles may need a fitness check, and a private vehicle's registration is renewed after 15 years.

Local rules

Some cities restrict older vehicles. The rules differ by state, so check with your RTO.

FAQ

Questions about vehicle age

Short answers about how the age is worked out.

01Which date should I use?

Use the registration date printed on the registration certificate, not the manufacturing date or the purchase date.

02Is the manufacturing date the same as the registration date?

No. A vehicle can be built in one month and registered in a later one. Age for RTO purposes counts from the registration date.

03How is the age counted?

From the registration date to today, or to the 'as on' date you choose, in complete years, months and days.

04At what age does a private vehicle need renewal?

A private vehicle's registration usually needs renewal at 15 years. The exact steps and fees are set by your state, so confirm with your RTO.

05Does this site store my date?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing is saved.
