Milestone colours

The colour on a kilometre stone shows the class of road.

A kilometre stone beside an Indian road carries the place name and the distance. The colour of the curved top shows which class of road it is, so the stone can be read at a glance.

Under the Indian Roads Congress type design for kilometre stones, a national highway stone is canary yellow, a state highway stone is brilliant green, and a major district road stone is white. Letters are black on yellow and white, and white on green.

Village roads and other district roads use a smaller stone. Orange is widely painted on rural-road stones. Blue or black-and-white stones are also seen on city and district roads. The place name and the kilometre figure on the stone are what fix the location. The colour only shows the class of road.
